  • Title: Family Impact of Chronic Pain in Elderly Individuals

Abstract

Pain can be described as an “unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with actual or potential tissue damage,” the term chronic refers to pain that lasts over three months. Chronic pain among elderly individuals not only affects the individual sufferer but also extends its reach to the family unit. Thus, this study provides an overview of the familial repercussions of chronic pain in older adults. Drawing upon existing literature and empirical evidence, it highlights how chronic pain disrupts family dynamics, affecting emotional well-being, social interactions, and financial stability. Moreover, it explores the challenges faced by family caregivers and the strain placed on familial relationships due to the demands of managing chronic pain in elderly relatives. Additionally, by examining coping strategies utilized by families and identifying gaps in support systems, it is notable the importance of targeted interventions to alleviate the burden of chronic pain on both elderly individuals and their families. By acknowledging and addressing the familial dimension of chronic pain in the elderly population, this study aims to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of its impact and facilitate the development of effective interventions to enhance the quality of life for older adults and their families.
