  • Title: Quantitative Measurement of Nutritive Sucking in Infants: a New Approach to Neurological Assessment

Abstract

Background: Feeding problems in small infants are extremely common and are often an early sign of future neurological problems. Quantitative evaluation of such problems is rarely possible; trained clinical observers usually assess and manage them. We describe a small device that captures continuous sucking pressures during feeding that quantitates a number of oral physiologic parameters during sucking. Our system has nothing conceptually new, but we have used it to develop an automated, computerized data processing and analytical program [Lang]. We have used this device to examine normal & high-risk neonates during regular feeding to develop some normal parameters.

Methods: Using a regular angled infant feeding bottle and nipple, a 12cm pressure chamber, which can contain breast milk or formula, is inserted into the bottle. The monitor feeds continuous data to a computer. Caregivers can hold infants during testing.

Results: As with EKGs or EEGs, results can be examined visually or with the quantitative computer generated programme. Behavioral abnormalities can be detected and followed over time to improve potential diagnoses and assess interventions' effects.
