  • Title: Concussion and Youth Suicide Risk

Abstract

Background: Dr. Naidoo has worked with thousands of high risk youth with mental health concerns- such as depression and suicide.  In her clinical work she has observed a high frequency of concussions as a primary medical concern that is in the history of actively depressed and suicidal youth.  In effort to better understand this correlation, Dr. Naidoo reviews research and presents cases that demonstrate the need to further investigate concussion and youth suicide risk.

Objective: Explore research and evidence of correlations between concussion, depression and suicidal ideations and action among adolescents. Explore evidence of suicide risk and suicide prevention strategies specific to those who have suffered from concussion. Explore if there are interventions to mitigate this risk.

Method: Case presentation and literature review

Results: Emerging evidence of concussion, in particular multiple concussions, as correlated with increased risk of suicidal ideations, intentions and plans

Conclusion: Increase frequency of suicide assessment and active referral to mental health providers for adolescent patients who have suffered from concussion.

Youth Suicide and Depression have been on the rise over the past several decades. Among adolescents with primary depressive and anxiety concerns, one of the most common medical concerns include concussion.  How is the risk of youth suicide impacted by concussion?  In this presentation, learn how concussion, adolescent mental health and suicide risk are connected and how suicide can be prevented.
