Abstract

This paper examines metacognition as a knowledge-based cognitive regulation of mental and physical actions produced through interacting forms of conscious processing. Neurological investigations into metacognitive phenomena inform research and guide interventions across disciplines from education to physical therapy. The paper reviews neurological and information processing literature on metacognition, discusses how research challenges traditional explanations of cognition while suggesting mechanisms for neuroplastic development, and the potential for quantum phenomena within nerve cells to explain and inform our educational use of metacognitive self-directed problem-solving behavior.
